First Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, a noticeable Louisville resident who fostered the Louisville Rider Club. Clark started development on the race course in 1874 ashore rented from two family members, John and Henry Churchill. He designed the Kentucky Derby after the English Work of art, the Epsom Derby. Well known rider Oliver Lewis rode H. P. McGrath's pure blood Aristides to triumph in the principal Kentucky Derby on 17/05/1875 at the Louisville Rider Club. Fourteen of the fifteen racers in the derby, including Lewis, were African Americans
